Appreneurs – The new success model?

By: Richard|26/02/2013

There isn’t any one app model out there that can bring success to the tables, but there are certain rules you can stick to that really help to boost your chances, and like with anything, persistence is the key. If you have a strong passion for creating an app and making it become successful, then with a few guidelines, a lot of research and a powerful drive, you can reach your goals.

What do I need to do to Make My App Successful?

When developing an app there are a few areas both to do with marketing and making a profit that will need to be thought out before even writing a line of code, and that’s why it’s important to know what kind of reason you are making the application for, and how to cater for that apps particular audience. If you are looking to make a profit, you’ll need to think carefully about how you’re going to do this.

In-app Purchases

IAPs have proven to be a great way to turn a profit from mobile applications. In fact, most top grossing apps that stick high up on the rankings earn most of their profits from in-app purchasing. If you’re going to use IAPs, it’s important to design your purchases constructively, and remember that if your app is free, those that have downloaded it will expect to play the game without paying, so create strong reasons to entice them to make an in-app purchase. Finding and working out a decent IAP strategy for your app is at times a tricky business, , you can create something that works well.

Free or Paid?

Unless you’ve already built a decent following, selling an app for $0.99-$2.99 is going to be extremely difficult. With all the competition it’s difficult enough without putting a price tag on your app, so having just a paid-for version is a no-go. That doesn’t mean you can’t charge for your app though. For example, you could offer an ad-supported version for free, whilst giving downloaders a chance to support you by purchasing the full ad-free version. You could also offer the app for free, but put a timed trial on the app or offer a small amount of features, making purchasing the app a requirement to use it with no restrictions.

Are adverts a good idea?

A lot of free apps include mobile advertising, and it is a viable and completely acceptable way of making some profit, however if you want your downloaders to frequently use your app, there are a few things to avoid. Firstly, don’t use any advertisement methods that place adverts outside of your app, as a lot of people find this intrusive and will make sure they remove the app to keep the adverts away. App placement within the app itself is also important. Placing adverts in place that break the functionality of the app are also considered a nuisance, and if you’re trying to get downloaders to purchase a full version, placing adverts in frustrating areas purposely is not a good technique. A better method would be to offer extra features that aren’t offered in the free version.

Making your customers feel valuable

When selling apps, it’s sometimes hard to think of your downloaders as customers, but they are, and if you want your apps to sell well, just like in any business you should treat your customers well. Whatever app you may be making, make sure to keep your customers in the loop and listen to their concerns and opinions of your application. Providing updates to fix bugs and issues will make your downloaders feel more happy to use your app over your competition, and by offering rewards for sharing the app, rating it on the app store, or following your social pages, you’re building upon your social recognition which is both helpful for increasing app sales and marketing any other apps you may plan on developing in the future.
Once you’ve worked out a solid strategy and model for your app, you can start developing it, but it’s important you work out your marketing and profit-earning strategies beforehand because without a solid plan you’ll find yourself backtracking and rewriting code to make up for new changes in your overall app design. Hopefully this information has helped you in some way, and if it has keep checking back to weevermedia for more information on making sure you create and develop a super successful application.
